CHECK OUT MAX"S NEW VIDEO OF TRICKS!
May 5
At last the ice has melted on the lake and almost daily Max and his foster pack are playing in the lake. Max finds it much more fun to simply follow the other dogs back and forth on the beach, and run and play, than be the leader of fun! You won’t see Max near the water without a ball or toy in his mouth. He does great fetching and swimming out after the ball but unlike many BCs he knows when to take a break. Often those breaks mean lying right down in the water!
Max needs a home that will give him leadership and at least 3 hours of constructive exercise a day. He will not do well in a city environment, as he is a country dog and much happier when he doesn’t have to worry about the many triggers such as bikes and loud vehicles. We continue to work on building good behavior and he is a great student and, oh, so lovable with the right people!

So it is the middle of winter and the lake is frozen and, oh, how Max dreams of summer so that he could go swimming and play fetch in the water all day. Instead, Max is getting plenty of daily exercise on the frozen lake! He loves playing Chuck-it with our pack of four that he has come to think of as his family pack.
Max has definitely picked up speed in the past 6 months and is like a bullet trying to run as fast as the other two border collies. He has excellent recall and is wonderful off leash. Because Max requires a lot of exercise and the outdoor temperatures simply don’t allow for hours outside, I have started training Max to do several tricks. He has now mastered “Cover your eyes” and we are working on crawl, head down, and opening the cooler. In addition he knows; sit, down, stay, wait, and leave-it. And he takes treats very gently.
This past weekend he took a three hour road trip with us and he rides fabulous in the car. He travels so well with the other four dogs that you barely know he is there. Max had the time of his life in Northern Michigan. He is now the official SLED DOG! Yes, Max was a trooper and rode down the hill on the sled with me at least 10 times, sitting on the sled the whole way down the hill like he was an Olympian bob sled pilot! Not only did he do great sledding down the hill but he did awesome with the 15 kids that were sledding with us. Not one time did he try and herd, grip or go after the excited kids; instead he was perfect mascot. He also did great with the 20 adults that were part of the weekend. He has come so far that words cannot begin to describe the positive change.
Max does still have some triggers that will set him off in a barking state of “what the heck is that!” Since the last writing he is actually doing much better with the birds at the feeder and squirrels outside, but he is still reactive at times. It is a work in progress. Max is no longer in a crate as he is not destructive at all in the house. Max’s perfect home would be with an experienced BC owner, someone with an active lifestyle to ensure at least 2-3 hours of exercise a day and a person committed to positive leadership and consistency. Max is a very lovable dog and has so much love to give back.

Now that the cold weather has set in and daily swimming is no longer an option (despite what Max thinks), we have had to alter our exercise routine. Daily walks of 5 miles and lots of fetch with the ball occupy a great portion of Max’s day. We recently started working on a few tricks to use of some of his energy.
Max is wonderful, loving boy and loves his foster dog family. He has made huge improvements with his reactiveness towards planes; however we continue to work on his stimulation triggers such as birds and squirrels while he is indoors. We are also working on his excitability with stimulations such as greeting guests and remaining calm in the pack. He enjoys visitors; however, he does take some time to reach a comfort level with new people.
He loves to play with toys and loves to hang out close by his foster K9 brother Cole; they are two peas in a pod! We no longer crate Max when we are gone as he is such a wonderful house guest.
Max requires a home that will give him 100% leadership with positive-based ongoing training and at least 3 hours a day exercise. Without exercise, Max will revert back to unwanted behaviors and not be the wonderful boy he is today. He can not be placed in a home with another dog that is super dominant.

Max continues to love lake life and has taken to lying in the lake to cool off on the hot summer days, especially after playing with his foster dog family. He loves to swim and just last week, took his first dive off the dock! He also enjoys floating on the raft with me, anything to be by my side!
Max is a special boy who has to have a lot of exercise- if you can not commit to at least 2 hours of constructive exercise, he is not the dog for you, as he will revert to unwanted behavior which includes sound sensitiveness and unwanted behavior towards others.
Max is a lovable boy but requires a home in the country, someone with Border collie experience and an owner committed to giving him 100% leadership. Max enjoys being part of a pack and would thrive in a home with another dog.

Max is a two year old, purebred border collie. He came to rescue with several issues including some aggression towards people, mainly strangers and dogs, especially while on a leash. He’s been with me for about two months and he has come a long way.
Max lives with 5 other dogs, and they all get along fine. He did have one severe altercation with my other foster, Cara, but the two of them now play like old buddies.
Max is crate trained and knows sit, down, stay, and watch. He has excellent recall. Max will also use the doggy door if necessary. Although he has not destroyed items in the house, he will on occasion relocate a shoe, but he doesn’t chew it! We are working on a few issues, including his keen resentment of airplanes which results in occasional barking, and he’s learning to relax in large crowds.
Max loves going for walks and heals nicely on lead. He loves being with his person, enjoys being petted and is happy to curl up next to your feet or on your lap. One of Max’s favorite things is swimming; he loves the water. He will dive in the lake after tennis balls and is learning to drop the ball on command. He rides well in the car, does well with grooming and is house trained. He is a medium energy border collie, but does like to play and be active.
Max’s ideal home would be near water and where he would get daily exercise. He does require a home where he will get consistency and leadership to ensure that he does not revert to the previous unwanted behaviors.
